The premiere of Game of Thrones season 2 is approaching fast! Like a lot of people, I’m very excited for season 2. I’m a big fantasy fan, a lot of my favorite stories (movies, books, video games) all tend to be set in a fantasy world. A Song of Fire and Ice is definitely up there as one of my favorite fantasy worlds. In fact, I have a map of Westeros hanging in my room, next to the map of Middle Earth and Skyrim! It’s hard to say because all the books are so good and George R. R. Martin is such a fantastic writer, but A Clash of Kings is definitely one of my favorites. The difference between A Song of Fire and Ice compared to other fantasies like Lord of the Rings is that the characters in this universe are very gritty, visercal and not very honorable.
For those of you who haven’t read the book, you’re in for a fast paced, adrenalized twisted ride! There are a lot new great characters and changes in familiar ones that will have you looking at them in a completely different light. I like that there is no clear line in terms of who is good or bad. We get to see the characters struggle with their own personal demons which makes them very relatable. My favorite characters are Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister and Jamie Lannister. Eddard Stark and Khal Drogo were great characters as well, it’s a shame we won’t be seeing them in any more seasons, but I will enjoy seeing my other favorite characters grow. The show follows very closely to the book, but also brings a lot of new things to the table that reading the novel can’t do. To me, reading the book doesn’t take away from the excitement of the show at all, but heightens the intensity of it.
If you love the show I recommend you take a look at the novels because it is a fantastic series. I could go on and on about A Song of Fire and Ice so I’ll leave it at that!
